G.P. rating stands for General Purpose Rating. In merchant navy field, there are mainly two department work on cargo vessel, deck department and engine department. So in this department crew are required to work under supervision of officers. They are called G.P. Ratings (general Purpose rating). There is having a third department called as saloon department which contains stewards and a cook.

Responsibilities of GP Rating:-

After completing GP Rating course you have to work in Deck or Engine department as a trainee cadet. After completion of training you will give permanent department after getting promotions.

Duties of the Engine Department- Crew:-

·       You are work with a duty engineer on watch (4+4 hour/ day) or in new unmanned ship you work in a day time.

·       You have to maintain your area is clean, check oil level parameter of machinery i.e. watch keeping

·       Provide assistance to engineer at the time of overhauling, to clean engine part and engine room.  

·       You should clean the engine parts and Engine room

Duties of the Deck Department- Crew:-

·       You should maintain deck by chipping rust, painting.

·       Mooring and Anchoring 

·       Carry out orders from master, ship officers as well as Bosun.

·       You are Lookout on gangway, bridge and security watch.

Required Eligibility Criteria:-

Passed is in 10th standard with 40% marks from a recognized board as well get marks in Science, Mathematics and English with 40% either 10th ,12th, or diploma/ degree exam.

OR

The candidates passed with 2 year ITI (Industrial Training Institutes)  or 3 years Diploma Course is in the Government approved Technical institutes with aggregate minimum 50% marks in last year and minimum 40% marks in English subject.

Physical Medical Standard:-

Candidates must be in good health and physically fit for sea service, with no diseases, physical or mental disabilities.

Prior to admission, candidates must undergo a full medical examination by who is approved by the D.G Shipping Government of India, and whose decision on fitness will be final.

Eyesight:-

Without visual aids, 6/6 in each eye.

Colour vision is normal

Candidates will be subjected to a through eye examination by a Company Medical officer.

Fees Structure:-

The course fees for the Pre – Sea Course for General Purpose rating range from Rs. 120000to Rs. 200000, which must be charged in one or more installment according to institute guidelines.


What Is G.P. Rating Salary :-

After 9 months of sea service as an ordinary seaman, the supplicant receives a watch keeping certificates and is promoted to Able Bodied Seaman (AB) with a salary of 1000$-1500$. If the applicant has the requisite qualifications, he will be paid as a bosun (2000$-2500$) and as an officer (3000$ -3500$).
