DNS stands for Diploma in Nautical Science. It is a merchant navy regarding pre-sea training 1-year Diploma course. Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) course Approved by Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) and it is affiliated with Indian Maritime University (IMU).
This course is conducted on various colleges in India, but we have to only take D.G shipping Approved college. Cadets who complete the DNS Course are awarded a pre-sea completion certificate and are qualified to join a ship as a deck cadet. DNS Course in Merchant navy gives opportunities to become Captain on the ship after few exams and sea sailing experience.

After completion of 18 months, onboard training period cadet has to obtain an SSTP completion certificate from the institute. In this 18 month, onboard training period cadet is entitled to the stipend, free boarding, and lodging. After this SSTP certificates cadet has to attend 4 months of post- sea shore-based training preparatory course for the ‘Second mates’ examination conducted by the D.G shipping (DGS) at approved institutes.

In this course, students also learn about how to work examine propulsion systems and drilling rills. The student learns details about principles of load lines, hydrostatic, classification, and marine vessel stability. DNS course covers the vibration monitoring of submerged vehicles and structures, effects of waves.
They are also introduced to a method for preparing, collecting, and presenting data through written reports that include the analysis, planning, and evaluation of each experiment done by the students.
